Nathalie Miraval, Aurora, CO – There hasn’t been a day where I haven’t thought about J Camp, whether it be something I learned or someone I met. J Camp has taught me a lot of life lessons. Journalism is still my passion and I share it with everyone I meet. I’m going to be the News Editor of the small paper at my school next year, along with National Honors Society Treasurer. Over the summer, an internship has opened up for me, which would allow me to work for a newspaper in Colorado Springs. Currently, I’m working with my dad (who’s also a journalist), taking video and photos for online and also learning as much as I can on the way. I love journalism and I know I can’t give up. Kellilyn Joe, Thoreau, NM — (J Camp) gave me the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in journalism. It also opened my eyes and made me realize the turmoil that we are put through on a daily basis. Attending J Camp encouraged me to speak my mind and if i want to find the facts it is as easy as asking a few questions. Also to get both sides of the story or conflict. July 2008

John Ketchum, Saginaw, MI — I am a broadcasting student at Central Michigan University, which is the best broadcasting school in the state and one of the best of the country. I am in good academic standing with all of my classes. I just currently got a job as a radio reporter at WMCMU news, an affiliate of National Public Radio (NPR) and one of the biggest university-owned on-campus radio stations in the country! I am writing stories and reporting them. I know that I would not have been able to obtain this job without the proper training and networking I received from my time at J Camp. My experience was one I will never forget. I am always recommending J Camp to young high school students, because I want them to have the same opportunities as me. A student that attends J Camp will be an AUTOMATIC success! July 2008

My major is journalism with a concentration in telecommunications. I work as a Writer for Around the Rings, an online publication that covers the Olympic movement. Tarah Knaresboro, San Jose, CA — After I first got into college, I took a break from journalism since it was basically my entire life in high school. A semester went by, and I rejoined — not out of habit, but because I sincerely enjoyed it. I think college is a good time to ask yourself what you really like to do, and weed out what has just become habit. Although journalism will not be my career, what I’ve learned writing and editing for newspapers and magazines has been invaluable. July 2008

Grace Kim, Whitestone, NY — AAJA was a wonderful experience and the skills I learned during that week have stayed with me since. The art of asking good questions, writing effectively, and synthesizing information to create an engaging story is one that is part of becoming a good writer, student, and person. Working on various publications since that summer, including my high school newspaper and an economics magazine in college, have further convinced me that journalism plays an essential role in creating a knowledgeable, educated, and active citizenry. Arelis Hernandez, Fort Washington, MD — I will be a graduate of the University of Maryland College of Journalism this coming May with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in U.S. Latina/o studies. After graduation, I will be reporting for the Associated Press in Houston for a summer internship. To my great surprise, I was named by U-Wire as one of the 100 best and brightest student journalists in the country. For the past four years, I have been afforded amazing opportunities to intern with The Orlando Sentinel, The Baltimore Sun, Washingtonpost.com, The Star-News in Wilmington, N.C, and my college newspaper The Diamondback. My relationship with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists has allowed me to participate in numerous journalism convention newspapers and programs. My first priority is to tell stories, especially from those voices that are muted in our society or never get their chance at the microphone. I have fashioned myself as a multimedia journalist going to communities far and wide to present narratives using the options technology has suppled. I am passionate about accuracy and fairness in my reporting, which includes breaking news, minority health, diversity issues, and the Latina/o community. Although the industry is in flux, I am excited about the future of journalism and the innovation young, transformation-minded, tech-savvy journalists like myself can bring. April 2009
